VICTORIAN LANDMARK

Built at the end of the 19th century as a private dwelling – whose gardens extended beyond what is now the town’s busiest traffic intersections - The Clockhouse has seen a variety of occupants come and go over the past 100-plus years.

By 1933, it had been bought by the founder of the Pearsons estate agency – Alfred Pearson – who in that year converted two ground floor rooms as offices.  Part of the ground floor was a dance school.  At that time, the first and second floors formed a spacious apartment.

Just prior to the Second World War, the flat’s tenant subsequently used the large first floor room beneath the clock tower for serving teas and light lunches to the general public – an enterprise that was to continue until the late 1940’s.

In the mid-1950’s, the complete building was converted to offices for the estate agency and, so, sealing its future as a property for commercial occupation.

In 1981, Shieling Communications Limited acquired the first and second floors and, therefore, has been associated with The Clockhouse for approaching a quarter of the building’s lifetime

In 2002, the company underlined its strong commitment to the building by signing a further 15-year lease.
